hello,
I am just reading ‘getting real’ – it is a challenging and frightening read- I have a 6 year old daughter. I am afraid for her, and was thinking about what i could do in order to protect her and build her resiliance (after I got past the ‘wrap her up in brown coduroy and homeschool her till shes 18′ strategy).
With this fresh in my mind this morning, I dropped her off at school- grade 1. A new interactive screen has been put up in the class room (its MASSIVE), and there was a jigsaw programme on it- some of the kids were doing it as I walked in- then I noticed an ad for “a flatter tummy in 3 weeks” which featured a cartoon of a woman getting thinner (in a bikini), and then back to larger to start it all again. I asked the teacher about it when the children were out of the room, and she said she had looked into trying to get advertising off this educational website but could not. I found it really disturbing- I work hard to build my daughters sense of self away from body image issues (as a survivor of an eating disorder myself)- I dont want it all undone in an educational environment.
I was wondering if there is a lobby group dealing with this?
I have not read the adprrofing your kids book yet, but intend to.
thanks
melinda
